Col 2:20-23 "Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence."

It's cool that Paul goes on to tell us what we need to do is focus on Christ. Communion is a time where we remember we are not saved by our attempts to "put sin in a tied up box"... we are saved by the blood of Jesus.

Thanks for sharing Scott!

I don't think there's anything wrong with what Joel Osteen said in that video. Who are we to judge who goes to heaven or hell? Yes, I know the Bible and I live my life according to the doctrine as best I can, but who am I to tell somebody they are going to hell or heaven? I can demonstrate Christ in my everyday life and talk to people about Jesus, but I don't believe it's my place to tell someone that doesn't believe in Christ that they're going to hell. I will tell them what the Bible says and what I believe. I will educate them, but what they take away from it is up to them. Standing in front of somebody threatening them with eternal damnation will turn 99% of people away from Christ instead of giving them an understanding of the love and sacrifice God has set aside for them.

Anybody that begins to follow Joel Osteen because he preaches what others call a "Cotton Candy Gospel" will begin to learn about God in a way they never would if they weren't reached out to in the loving way Osteen presents the gospel. They will then begin to develop a relationship with God, and the Holy Spirit will convict them of what needs corrected in their life, not me.

If Joel Osteen had given a definitive "Yes, Jews and all that deny Christ are going to hell" in that interview, there would be hundreds or possibly thousands of people that listen to Osteen drop their walk with Christ and never pick it up again, rather than following him for another few weeks and understanding what love God has for them, which is the foundation to a strong, lasting relationship with God.

Yes, only God can judge a man's heart, so you will never hear me say that somebody is going to hell.Condemnation is not the way to bring people to Christ, love is. Christ enabled me with the love I have for everybody I meet, so I will reflect that in our relationship, not try to frighten them into a walk with God.

We were so disappoited to have been unable to be there. Nonetheless it looks as though you've taken on the mantle with appropriate solemnity. I have no doubt you'll do your utmost to proclaim the Word and to empower those saints to minister as well. Blessings.

Excellent thoughts!

May God's richest blessings be yours as you reflect on the extent of His love demonstrated through the death His Son on the cross and the awesomeness of His power exhibited through the resurrection.

To God be the glory!

Hey Scott:
So...I'll admit I've been blog-stalking you for a few months now, but just thought this would be a good time to leave a first comment. I was excited to read that you are incorporating a bit of the liturgical tradition into your church's service tonight. I am part of an Anglican Community here in Wheaton (Church of the Resurrection) and have been really moved so far by experiencing the church's Lenten and Holy Week traditions. You are right about the Lord's Supper: we took it last night at the Maundy Thursday service, as well as feet washing. I just got back from a stations of the cross service which was a very neat way to enter into and pray through the hours preceding Christ's death. I have found in general that participating in these Anglican traditions for the first time in my life has made this season of Lent and Holy Week an especially somber but spiritually rewarding time for me. I hope you and your congregation also find that true tonight. Blessings, Catie T.

Received the church paper today and was reading about your blog and sermon podcasts and so decided to check it out -- was great to hear your induction sermon -- could also picture your folks there as well. Thanks for the encouragement.

Wanted to just say too that we just discovered this "book furniture" site last fall and thought it was great and so too have shared with quite a few fellow book lovers!! : )

Hmmm....interesting...i'm going to have to check this out. I tried to use the links but it didn't work. Because I'm visual, I like the redesign idea. Keeps things fresh and mixed up and interesting. Flipside...if our lives are fresh and mixed up and interesting enough with our involvement in advancing the Kingdom...maybe it wouldn't matter as much if things got changed every three years. Shhh....don't tell the board, though.
I'm off to Google Brian Jones 64 Things...thanks!
